touristic sights In addition to the attractions crafted by both man and nature, Gorj County is a wonderful place to learn more about Romanian customs and traditions, as it is a thesaurus of national spirituality. Among its tourism advantages, the following are some of the most important: T?rgu Jiu: The name of the county seat comes from a fair that was held on the banks of the Jiu River in olden times. Among the unique aspects of Targu Jiu is that it is the home of many of Br?ncu?i?s art masterpieces ? the Silent Table (Masa T?cerii), the Gate of Kiss (Poarta S?rutului), and the Endless Column (Coloana Infinutului). Hobita: On the way to Tismana, the traveler should stop at Hobita, at the house of the Patriarch of the World sculpture, one of Gorj?s sons of international repute. Considered as ?the Mallarme of Sculpture?, the artist grew up among the wood carvers of Gorj from whom he learnt the trade. He created, on the bank of the Jiu River in Targu Jiu ?The Table of Silence?, a massive round table with 12 chairs. It features ?The Gate of the Kiss? and ends with ?The Endless Column? about which its author used to say: ?with this column I prop up the sky!?. Nearby is Dumbrava, an ancient forest that lines the path to the famous Tismana Monestry, which was constructed in the 14th Century. With little ornamental design, the building seems to have ?grown? there, being one of the oldest monasteries in Oltenia. Ranca ans Sacelu Spas: A trip to Ranca, followed by a stop at its impressive spa is a cure for whatever ails the weary traveler. Over the past years the Novaci town council leased plots of land on which a large number of villas were built. As the process continues, Ranca will become a spa located in a magnificent landscape. Women?s Cave: The route to Baia-de-Fier is particularly picturesque. This is the location of the Women?s Cave, a superb natural monument that is open all year. The Women?s Cave features the Organ ? stalagmites and stalactites that have joined over time, and the Small Dome, which is a strange kind of castle. The wonders continue around every corner with the Altar ? columns of stalagmites very close to one another, the Veil of the Altar and the Cupola of the Altar resembling a fantastic cathedral with a staircase of stalagmites. The Turk?s Room hosts a ?Santa Claus? in front of which one may see the Odalisque, a female nude above which there is the huge head of a predatory bird with its break open menacingly. The Women?s Cave is a microcosm of the wonders awaiting visitors to Gorj County! |
