Prahova County Prahova County covers 4,694 sq km, or 2% of Romania. Its topography is a microcosm of the whole country, with mountains, hills and plains. In the northern part of county, mountains ranges run from north to south; the highest is the Bucegi range, which includes Omu Peak ? 2,507 m altitude. Having a rather narrow surface, of only 300 sq kilometers, the Bucegi Mountains display a wide range of geographic units including ice valleys, spectacular quays carved in limestone, astounding walls made up of conglomerates, sharp towers, strange rock formations due to the differential erosion, such as Babele, the famous Sphinx, and many others. The flora of the Bucegi Mountains is very diversified, unparalleled by any other mountain. For those who want to photograph flowers, the period between May and September offers outstanding views. Those who want to photograph bears will have to stay overnight in one of the sheepfolds (June the 1st - September the 15th), while the chamois can be seen all year round. Toward the east, the Baiu Mountains are bordered by the gorgeous Doftana Valley, which offers the tourists spectacular views. Teleajen, a river that springs from the core of Ciuca? Mountains, also flows into the Prahova River. Having a surface of its basin of 1,486 sq. kilometers and a total length of 100,8 kilometers, it molded a valley that is full of tourist sites, due to the fact that end of fall, the inhabitants produce the famous "tuica de V?leni" which is a kind of Romanian brandy, the rival of Scottish whiskey.
touristic sights
Prahova County is filled with tourist sites that will thrill both nature lovers and historians. A few of those sites include the following: Sinaia: Sinaia is known as the ?Pearl of the Carpathians?, and is situated at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters. It is considered the most beautiful tourist resort of the Carpathians. The town has a fascinating history, linked first of all to the Royal Family of Romania, Sinaia being their first residence outside the capital until 1947. The Peles Castle and Museum, built in a Germanic style at the end of the 19th century has approximately 160 rooms filled with valuable art collections, weapons and furniture. Worth mentioning is also the Sinaia Monastery, built between 1695 and 1795 in Brancovan style. It now hosts a museum with inestimable manuscripts and art objects. The buildings of the Casino, of the Palace Hotel and the Furnica Complex display a splendid architecture specific to the 19th century. There are cable transport facilities to the Bucegi Plateau (at an altitude of more than 2,000 m), as well as ski and bobsleigh tracks. Campina: Campina lies in a picturesque hilly region of the county. The town has rich cultural traditions illustrated by museums such as those dedicated to the great Romanian painter Nicolae Grigorescu or to the great scholar B.P.Hasdeu. Busteni: The town is located on Prahova Valley between the Caraiman and Costila Peaks and offers a unique view of the Bucegi Mountains. There is access to a cross on top of Caraiman Peak that was built between 1926 and 1928 in the memory of those who died in the battles fought along Prahova Valley in World War I. Trails can be followed from Busteni or the cable car can be used to get to the Babele area (the Old Women) on the Bucegi Plateau. Busteni is also a fine destination for winter sports. Azuga: Lying on Prahova Valley, 15 km from Busteni, at an altitude of about 1,000 m, the town boasts a new and modern ski track equipped with a ski lift. The surroundings are picturesque with numerous marked trails up the mountains. In Azuga there is also a very old brewery and a champagne factory. Breaza: This resort is situated in the hilly part of Prahova Valley at an altitude of 500-600 meters. It is well known for it fresh air, the quality of its waters and traditional folk embroideries. Valenii de Munte: On the Valley of the Teleajen (a tributary of Prahova) at an altitude of 300-400 m, there is a town surrounded by hills covered with forests and pastures.
