Suceava County Suceava County is at the center of a region called Bucovina where in the Middle Ages, the first small towns and the political parties appeared. Bucovina was also the central location in the battle against the Tartars. It is also the location of the first royal residence of Dragos Voda, which is located at Baia. The City of Suceava is the county seat. It was the capital of Moldova for over two centuries. Under Stephen ?the Great? (1457-1504) it became a shield for freedom and for the battle for national unity. The county is the home to the biggest concentration of royal necropolis, which can be found at the Voroneti, Radauti, Putna, Slatina, Humorului, Moldovita, Probota, Sucevita, and Dragomirna monasteries. Dumitru Onciul, the historian, wrote: ?There is no such richness of Romanian history, such valuable memories to our past on a small territory as there is in Bucovina?. Mihail Kogalniceanu saw in Bucovina Moldova?s most beautiful region. This greatness is punctuated by Campulung, site of the old Roman?s republic, by Suceava, the capital of the royal heroes, and by its most famous and the richest monasteries of which one is the awe-inspiring Putna, the final resting place of Stephen the Great. From a geographical point of view, Bucovina is situated in Suceava County, in the northeast Romania. The county?s terrain is comprised of both the Oriental Carpathians and the Moldova Plateau. Its topography is formed by mountains and plateaus. In the northwest lies the Obcinele Bucovinei as well as the Siretul River. The main lakes in the county are Iezer, Dragomirna, Ochiuri, Nada Florilor, all of which are excellent for anglers and water sports enthusiasts. The Dornelor Valley, having as center the Vatra Dornei Spa, is very rich in mineral waters, the most important being situated in the Saru Dornei, Cosna, and Poiana Negri communes. Bucovina is criss-crossed by beech forests, pine forests, of which over 53% are declared protected nature areas. Some of these areas are Codrul Secular in Slatioara, Tinovul Mare in Poiana Stampei, and Giumalau Secular Forest. |
